Bach wrote an unsurpassed set of 6 pieces each for unaccompanied violin and cello. These pieces explore and extend the virtuosic capabilities as well as expressive possibilities of the instrument. The famous cellist Pablo Casals felt he had to play at least some part of Bach’s cello suites well into his 90s! In honor and remembrance of Casals, Part 1 will examine six cello works. (In Part 2 we will cover the violin pieces.)
