Michael Walzer is a scholar-activist with a unique approach to ethical and political philosophy. He is the author of "Just and Unjust Wars" and a major theorist of the ethics of war and humanitarian intervention, as well as works such as "Spheres of Justice" that explore equality and justice as composites rather than simple-to-apply maxims. Although for a long-time he was co-editor of Dissent, a democratic-socialist periodical, Walzer is hard to categorize and therefore interesting as someone sympathetic to tradition and skeptical of utopias. The course will be a reading and discussion of some of Walzer's writings about war, equality, social criticism, and national identity.
