THE STRING QUARTET, PART 1: ORIGINS AND EARLY HISTORY
Mon. 1:00-2:00
Two violins, a viola, and a cello: a very compact ensemble, and yet the scope of its music can range from restrained to nearly symphonic in scale. In these sessions we will look at how, when, and why this particular grouping originated and soon began to dominate chamber music. We will listen to recordings that reflect the early evolution of the string quartet and point to the developments that followed.
