MODERN PAINTING: ART AS EXPERIENCE
Thurs. 2:30-3:30 (Limit 50)
How do you look at art when it doesn’t seem to be about anything? About 1875, light, texture, color, and shape began to take the place of narrative in painting. It wasn’t about what you recognized in a painting but how you felt emotionally when you looked at it. In this course you will learn about what happened in western painting between 1875 and 1960 with its many styles and painters, how to look and understand what you see in a Picasso or a Matisse or a Kandinsky, and why it matters as an experience.
