Mozart and Da Ponte – the Greatest Collaboration in Opera

Facilitator: Robert Hoffman

A brilliant and prolific composer paired with one of the greatest librettists, what more could you ask? This duo created three of the most satisfying operas ever written: The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Cosi Fan Tutte. Figaro is based on the plays of Beaumarchais, tweaking the foibles of the nobility. The rake, Don Giovanni (Don Juan) was a popular subject for many playwrights and poets, and though in the opera he finally gets his due, at least some of the characters live happily ever after. Cosi Fan Tutte (“So Do They All”) takes a bittersweet look at the strengths and weaknesses of relationships, but finally comes to a happy ending.
