The two giants of the jazz big band, Duke Ellington and Count Basie, were pianists, composers, and bandleaders. Aside from those obvious accomplishments, two of the best things about them is that their style was recognizably their own, and they both had an unerring ear for talent, hiring great sidemen in their bands, many of whom stayed for years
