Flight of Remembrance: A World War II Odyssey

Facilitator: Marina Kirsch

Flight of Remembrance attendees will experience three decades of tumultuous European history in Latvia, occupied Poland, and Germany through the story of the speaker's parents—Rolf Dutzmann, a Latvian aeronautical engineering student forced to flee to Germany before the first Soviet takeover of the Baltic States, and Lilo Wassull, the young woman he met in 1940 Berlin. Rolf pursued his technical dream and the woman he loved against a worldwide panorama of chaos and destruction which included being drafted into the German military and surviving air raids, Allied takeover, and POW camp. Despite the odds, Rolf and Lilo visualized a life together beyond the cataclysm which held the gift of a new beginning and the expansion of Rolf's aeronautical dream to a key role in the U.S. space program. The speaker's presentation includes slides with a map of Europe and many authentic family photographs.
