The Ideal vs the Real: The art of the 19th century in Europe and America

5 Weeks (TERM 1 :9/15 – 10/13)

Thursdays 3:00 – 4:30PM ONLINE ZOOM

This course traces the movement in painting from the idealism of the Romantic era through the Realism of mid-century and beyond.  Seven art movements will be featured, and the art works will include landscapes, still-life painting, portraits, genre painting, and political works. Each class will offer about 35 specific works of art and participants will have handouts to follow along and a list of the art shown. No experience with art history is required as the class will be an introduction to European and American art.

Facilitator: Nancy Baker
